![]() This week I will be working with the harness and how to attach it to the rope. I'll go up to the fire department with my mentor/dad and we will work some more with the anchor and then we will work with the harness. I learned how to put on a class three harness comfortably and safely. The class three harness has two parts. The first piece goes around your waist and legs and the second piece goes around your shoulders and chest. ![]() After I had correctly fastened the harness I got ready to connect it to the rope. In order to do this I had to tie the anchor I worked on last week and then tie a prusik to the rope. These act as breaks in order for me stop from falling down the rope. If you pull on these they grip the rope to stop you so you don't just slide down. In order to tie these you must wrap them around three times. In order to connect the harness to the rope you connect the harness to the prusik you use carabiners.

![]() This week for this project I'll be working on finding out what a good anchor is and how to secure the rope to it. My mentor will be teaching me what a safe anchor is and how to secure the rope. I will be talking with him to figure out what to do in order to safely secure the rope so that I do not get hurt while climbing. I learned how to set up the rope before I start climbing to ensure my safety. In order to climb safely you must first wrap the rope around a beam or something sturdy at the top. You wrap the rope around this about four or five times. Next, you take one end of the rope and you tie a figure eight knot into it. After that you wrap the end of the rope around the other rope and do a figure eight follow through by following the rope through the knot you already have. Finally you tie a safety which is a half hitch knot at the top of the figure eight follow through. These steps will help get you started on ascending a rope. On this website you will find my journey in figuring out how to ascend a rope using the proper gear. If you haven't noticed by now the title is a reference to a Miley Cyrus classic called "The Climb," I just thought I would mention this, because it makes me happy. Anyways, during this period of time I have these next weeks and in class time I will be working on safely ascending a rope. I will have and experienced mentor (my dad) Jason Myrick who has done this many times. In fact he has been professionally trained to do this successfully, because of his job as a fireman. He will be making sure I am using the proper techniques and that I'm completely safe.
In this project I will be using the gear at the fire department that he works at. The first few weeks I'll just be learning things like what a safe anchor is so the rope is secure an how to correctly attach the harness so I am safe and secure. After I know I can safely ascend the rope I will start climbing. My progress will be measured on how good I am able to climb or even if I can even bring myself to do it. I have a fear of heights, so it will take some getting used to and courage in order to climb this rope. This project will have some difficulties, but I am determined to do this. It will be interesting just to see how well my dad and I work together. We might fight a lot at first, but I'll get it that's how it usually works. The firemen have to climb the water tower every year for their training. I think that would be cool if I could bring myself to do it, but I don't think it is legal for me to. I could use this skill to go climb small mountains. I'm not going to go crazy and do Mount Everest... Not yet at least. |
